Chen Cheng-Hsiung was born in 1935, in Taipei, Taiwan. His father expected him, the oldest son in a family, to pursue a career in business, therefore he was not able to obtain a traditional training in art. Nevertheless, with the guidance of Lee Shih-Chiao, Liao Chi-Chun and Chin Jun-Tso, his early semi-figurative works were frequent award-winners at Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition and Taiyang Exhibition. With excellent foreign language skills, Chen directly studied Western abstract art theory and adopted the absorptions into his personal unique style, thus gradually developing his own abstract forms.

Chen Chen-Hsiung is not only a painter who focuses on abstract art, but he is also a renowned Post-war artist in Taiwan. In 1999 and 2001, he was awarded Lorenzo il Magnifica Life-time Achievement in Art Award at the “Florence Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea”, thus becoming the first artist in Asia to receive this award. Although Chen is already over eighty years old, he still continues creating. What is more, he helps guiding young abstract artists and is one of the most important promoters of abstract art in Taiwan.
